Our garden on Gardener's World

Gardener’s World has been one of my favourite TV shows since I was in primary school – and definitely fed into my love of gardens and gardening – so it was a real pinch me moment to see our garden featured on the show this season…

The team came to visit us last year, but the episode only aired this summer and we were very excited to get to see it! You can see us in episode 23 of the 2023 series (skip ahead to minute 48 if you want to get straight to us.)

It was a typical Swansea summer’s day when they visited: bright blue skies followed by complete downpours, so filming involved plenty of umbrellas!

In the programme, I talk about some of the specific challenges and benefits of the location of our garden, and we take a little tour through the garden and its different “rooms.”

Our garden is long and relatively narrow, and on a steep slope. It’s approx 50m long by 12m wide, and drops a huge total of 4m from one end to the other! To deal with the height change, we’ve designed it as a series of terraces, decreasing in height as you move away from the house. Each terrace is set out as a distinct “room” with a specific purpose.

We’ve incorporated an outdoor kitchen, a dining area, a seating area and – new since the programme was filmed – a hot tub terrace as well! We’ve also got plenty of planting, of course, with silver birches around the edges, a limited palette of some of our favourite low maintenance plants repeated across all of the different areas, and a bulb lawn right at the bottom.
